Channeling: body ←Image→ viewer (2025), co-curated with Joan Giroux, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago

The central premise of this exhibition was to consider how artists since the 1970s utilise performance to communicate lived experience. Different to my earlier research-oriented exhibitions, the curation of this show was less about bringing new materials to light and more about considering artists’ engagement with communication between their body and the body of the viewer, by bringing together seminal installations, photography and videos that had mostly not been seen before by a Chicago audience and had never been seen within an exhibition together. Our aim was to place the works so that they were in dialogue, opening questions about communication between artists and viewers and their experience engaging with works focused on the body, through photography, video and installation. In this way, for example, we brought together Susan Hiller’s Monument (Colonial Version),1980–1981 and Gustav Metzger’s Historic Photographs: To Crawl into–Anschluss, Vienna, March, 1938, 1996–1998, both photographic installations that incorporate the image of the viewer when they are engaging with the works, through gestures of listening in the case of Hiller, and crawling in the case of Metzger, their physical presence completing the work for other viewers to see. The exhibition included works by Laura Aguilar, Pia Arke, EJ Hill, Ketty La Rocca, Shari Rothfarb Mekonen, Gustav Metzger, Paulo Nazareth, Anna Oppermann, Gina Pane and Bridget Smith.
