Alice Maude-Roxby is a freelance curator, writer and artist. Her research specialisms include performance and its photography, feminist photography, collaborative practices, artists’ teaching, and artists’ publishing. Her interests are sparked by instances where the actuality of how something has been produced, disseminated and analysed conflicts with the versions given within the overarching narratives of the art historical canon. Primarily her research is shared through publications and large-scale curated exhibitions of contemporary and historic practices, often featuring artefacts remade by Maude-Roxby to archival instructions, with accompanying contextual interviews and videos made by the artist.
Research into the work of pioneering performance artist Gina Pane
Maude-Roxby co-edited the anthology Gina Pane: actions through time with Sophie Delpeux. Published by Routledge in 2026, the anthology forms part of a series of publications, essays and exhibitions exploring the documentation, history and afterlife of live performance. Other works in the series include the exhibition and book Live Art on Camera, John Hansard Gallery, Southampton UK, 2007–2008, “The Delicate Art of Documenting Performance” in Adrian George’s Art, Lies and Videotape: exposing performance, Tate Liverpool, Tate Publishing, 2003, and the publication On Record: advertising, architecture and the actions of Gina Pane, co-authored with Françoise Masson and published by Artwords Press, 2004.
Photography as a feminist tool, and women artists’ collaborations and networks
Through her current research interest, Maude-Roxby has worked on studies of the 70s and 80s including “Making Connections: Pia Arke and feminists using photography” for Pia Arke, John Hansard Gallery and KW, Berlin, 2024, and research of women’s practices of the 1930s within the books and exhibitions Censored Realities: Changing New York, Camera Austria, 2018 and the exhibition Resist: be modern (again), John Hansard Gallery, 2019 – both co-developed with Stefanie Seibold. The exhibition Channeling: body ←Image→ viewer at Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago in 2025 was co-curated with Joan Giroux and focused on communications between artists and viewers through performance, video and photographic sequences and installations by Ketty La Rocca, Susan Hiller, Gina Pane, Anna Oppermann, Pia Arke, and Laura Aguilar, alongside contemporary practices.
Teaching and academic positions
Art education has played a central role in Maude-Roxby’s career and was also the subject for an exhibition and book, Anti-Academy, John Hansard Gallery, 2013–2014. She has held consecutive senior roles in UK universities including as Departmental Director of Research in Visual Arts, Middlesex University, 2017–2024; Programme Director and Head of Photography, Falmouth University, 2011–2017; Principal Lecturer, Kingston University, 2007–2011; Senior Lecturer in Fine Art, Sheffield Hallam University, 2000–2007; and Photography Research Fellow and Associate Lecturer, Winchester School of Art, 1995–1999.

Internationally and in the UK, Maude-Roxby has been supported by research grants and fellowships including awards from Leverhulme Trust (Norway), Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD Berlin), Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Arts Council England, Japan Foundation (Tokyo), Danish Arts Council and Maison Suger (Paris), amongst others.
